What is a GTM engineer? Role, salary, skills, and tools (2026)

A GTM engineer (GTME, or go-to-market engineer) builds the systems that find, score, and reach the right accounts, so a revenue team can grow pipeline without adding the same amount of headcount. Think enrichment, scoring, buying signals, routing, and outbound and inbound automation, wired into the CRM. New to the vocabulary? The GTM glossary defines the terms used below.

By Garrett Wolfe, founder of OneGTM, former GTM engineer at Unify (employee #9), and author of the State of GTME report. Updated .

Key takeaways

  • GTM engineers build revenue systems (data, signals, scoring, automation) instead of doing outreach by hand.
  • GTM engineer job postings went from 63 in 2024 to more than 3,300 in 2025. Current openings are on the GTM engineer jobs tracker.
  • US base salaries run from about $65K to $250K+, per 225+ survey responses in the 2026 State of GTME report.
  • The fully loaded year-one cost, with benefits, tools, and recruiting, is in the outbound cost calculator.
  • Core tools: Clay, a CRM, an automation layer like n8n, a sequencer, and more and more, AI coding agents like Claude Code. Our GTM tool guides compare each category.

What does a GTM engineer do?

A GTM engineer builds and runs the systems that decide which accounts a revenue team works, when, and with what message. Day to day that means mapping and scoring the market, wiring enrichment and buying signals, setting up outbound infrastructure and sequences, routing leads in the CRM, and writing code or AI workflows for whatever off-the-shelf tools cannot do. The job is measured in meetings and pipeline per rep, not in emails sent.

GTM engineering is the practice of building automated, data-driven revenue systems. Where a traditional team scales pipeline by hiring more SDRs, a GTM engineer builds the machinery so each rep works better accounts with better context. The practice itself, with the stack and the core workflows, is in the GTM engineering guide.

Day to day, that usually means some mix of the following:

TAM and list building

Mapping the total addressable market and pulling accounts and contacts from data providers.

Enrichment

Waterfalls across several providers to fill in firmographics, emails, phones, and tech stack.

Scoring

Fit and intent scores that tell reps which accounts to work first, synced to the CRM.

Signals

Watching for hiring, funding, job changes, website visits, and product usage, then triggering action.

Outbound infrastructure

Domains, mailboxes, deliverability, sequencing, and LinkedIn automation.

Routing and CRM

Getting inbound and outbound leads to the right owner fast, with clean data behind them.

AI research and agents

Claude and GPT workflows that research accounts, write first drafts, and triage replies.

Internal tools

Custom scripts and apps, often built with Claude Code, for what off-the-shelf tools cannot do.

GTM engineer salary in 2026

There was no reliable pay data for this role, so in early 2026 I ran the State of GTME report: 225+ anonymized, self-reported responses from GTM engineers at companies from seed stage to public, across North America, Europe, and APAC. To estimate pay for a specific role, use the GTM engineer salary calculator. For who is hiring right now, see the GTM engineer jobs tracker. A few findings:

  • US base salaries ranged from about $65K to more than $250K. Experience and technical depth explain part of the gap. The rest is that the market has not settled on what the role is worth yet.
  • 49% of GTM engineers get no performance bonus, and 67% hold less than 10 basis points of equity.
  • 54% of practitioners are under 27, so the talent pool skews early-career.
  • 72% report measurable revenue impact from their GTM engineering work.
  • Agency GTM engineering ranged from about $2,000 to $33,000+ per month.

For current openings, see OneGTM's GTM engineer roles.

GTM engineer skills and tools

Nobody needs all of these on day one. The people who do well can connect data, logic, and messaging into something that runs without them.

  • Data and enrichment: Clay, Apollo, and other providers; waterfall logic; deduping and matching.
  • CRM: HubSpot, Salesforce, or Attio data models, properties, workflows, and APIs.
  • Automation: n8n, Zapier, or Make, plus webhooks and scheduled jobs.
  • Outbound: Instantly, Smartlead, lemlist, or HeyReach, and the deliverability basics behind them.
  • Code and AI: SQL, Python or JavaScript, and AI coding agents like Claude Code and Cursor.
  • GTM judgment: knowing your ICP, which signals matter, and what a rep will actually use.

GTM engineer vs. RevOps vs. SDR

For an early-stage startup, a GTM engineer usually beats an SDR agency once you know who buys. An SDR agency rents you outreach that stops when the contract does. A GTM engineer, in-house or from an agency, builds the list, signals, and sequences in your own accounts, so founders and the first reps keep the system. If you have not closed your first ten customers yet, neither replaces founder-led selling.

RevOps owns process, forecasting, reporting, and CRM governance. SDRs do the outreach. A GTM engineer builds the systems both of them run on: the data, signals, scoring, and automation. At a startup, one person often covers GTM engineering and RevOps. At larger companies they split. More on the RevOps side at RevOps agency.

How to become a GTM engineer

  1. Start from a GTM seat. SDR, sales ops, RevOps, growth, and marketing ops are the usual on-ramps.
  2. Learn Clay and one automation tool. Courses like Clay Bootcamp and Claymba shorten this, or start with the free GTM engineering course.
  3. Learn your CRM's data model and API. Most broken GTM systems break here.
  4. Build one system end to end. A TAM list with scoring and a signal-triggered sequence is a good first project.
  5. Pick up some code. SQL plus Claude Code or Cursor gets you past what no-code tools can do.
  6. Write down results. Pipeline created and hours saved are what hiring managers ask about.

How to hire a GTM engineer

To hire a GTM engineer, decide the first system you need built, then test candidates on a paid piece of that work instead of a generic interview. Most bad GTM engineer hires come from a vague job description, so write down the one or two systems the hire owns in the first 90 days.

  1. Name the first system. A scored account list with one signal-triggered sequence, an inbound routing fix, or an enrichment waterfall. Each needs a different profile.
  2. Pick the model. Full-time if the work is steady, a fractional GTM engineer or agency if you need it built in weeks or before you can hire.
  3. Benchmark pay. US base salaries in the 2026 State of GTME report ran from about $65K to $250K+. The salary calculator narrows it by region, company size, and coding depth.
  4. Source where the work is visible. Look for people who post their builds, not only their titles. The GTME Data Report shows who is hiring and what they ask for.
  5. Run a paid work sample. Give finalists 200 real accounts and ask them to score them, find contacts, and draft one signal-based sequence. Judge the reasoning as much as the output.
  6. Give them access on day one. CRM admin, the sequencer, and a data budget. A GTM engineer without API keys is a consultant.

Fractional GTM engineers. If you need the system before you can hire, a fractional GTM engineer builds it part-time inside your stack. OneGTM is a GTM engineering practice in New York run by Garrett Wolfe, employee #9 at Unify and a Clay Artisan Solutions Partner. I work as a fractional, forward-deployed GTM engineer: I build in your CRM, domains, and tools, and your team keeps everything when your own hire starts. See how an engagement works.

Hire a GTM engineer or a GTM engineering agency?

Hire in-house when there is steady system work and someone to manage the role. Bring in an agency when you need systems built in weeks, or you want them in place before your first GTM engineer starts. OneGTM does the second: founder-led GTM engineering builds your team owns afterward. For the wider field, see the best GTM engineering agencies.

GTM engineer FAQ

What does a GTM engineer do?
A GTM engineer builds and runs the systems that decide which accounts a revenue team works, when, and with what message. That means scoring the market, wiring enrichment and buying signals, setting up outbound infrastructure and sequences, routing leads in the CRM, and building AI workflows and internal tools. The job is measured in meetings and pipeline per rep, not emails sent.
What is a GTM engineer?
A GTM engineer (GTME, or go-to-market engineer) builds the systems that generate and manage pipeline: data enrichment, lead and account scoring, signal monitoring, routing, and outbound and inbound automation. The role sits between sales, marketing, and RevOps, and uses tools like Clay, n8n, the CRM, and increasingly AI coding agents like Claude Code instead of adding SDR headcount.
What is GTM engineering?
GTM engineering is the practice of building automated, data-driven revenue systems instead of scaling pipeline with manual labor. It combines RevOps, outbound, and lead generation into one technical function that owns how accounts are found, scored, prioritized, and contacted.
How much does a GTM engineer make?
Pay varies a lot. In the 2026 State of GTME report (225+ self-reported responses), US-based GTM engineers had base salaries from about $65K to more than $250K. 49% received no performance bonus and 67% held less than 10 basis points of equity. Agency GTM engineering retainers ranged from about $2,000 to $33,000+ per month.
What skills does a GTM engineer need?
Data enrichment and list building, CRM architecture (HubSpot, Salesforce, or Attio), workflow automation (Clay, n8n, Zapier, Make), outbound infrastructure and deliverability, basic scripting or SQL, APIs and webhooks, AI prompting and agents, and enough sales and marketing sense to know which signals actually matter.
What is the difference between a GTM engineer and RevOps?
RevOps owns process, reporting, forecasting, and CRM governance across the revenue org. A GTM engineer builds the machinery that creates pipeline: enrichment, signals, scoring, and outbound and inbound automation. There is overlap, and at small companies one person often does both.
How do I become a GTM engineer?
Most GTM engineers come from SDR, sales ops, RevOps, growth, or marketing ops roles. Learn Clay and one automation tool, get comfortable with a CRM's data model and APIs, build a real outbound or enrichment system end to end (even for a side project), and document the results. Courses like Clay Bootcamp and Claymba help with the tooling.
Should I hire a GTM engineer or a GTM engineering agency?
Hire in-house when you have steady, ongoing GTM system work and someone to manage the role. Use an agency when you need systems built quickly, need senior experience you cannot hire yet, or want the systems set up before bringing someone in to run them. Many teams do both: an agency builds, then trains the in-house hire.
How do I hire a GTM engineer?
Decide the first system the hire will own, such as a scored account list with a signal-triggered sequence or an inbound routing fix. Benchmark pay (US base salaries ran from about $65K to $250K+ in the 2026 State of GTME report), source people who show their builds, and run a paid work sample on 200 real accounts before you make an offer.
Can I hire a fractional GTM engineer?
Yes. A fractional GTM engineer builds your systems part-time inside your own stack, which suits teams that need the work done before they can hire full-time. OneGTM is a GTM engineering practice in New York run by Garrett Wolfe, employee #9 at Unify, who works as a fractional, forward-deployed GTM engineer and hands the system to your team.
Should an early-stage startup hire a GTM engineer or an SDR agency?
Once you know who buys, a GTM engineer usually wins: an SDR agency rents you outreach that stops with the contract, while a GTM engineer builds the list, signals, and sequences in your own accounts so you keep them. An SDR agency fits when you need meetings this quarter and already have a proven pitch. Before your first ten customers, neither replaces founder-led selling.
